Marascull 2010

The Portadown marascull took place on Saturday 16th October under a clear blue sky and very little wind, perfect conditions for rowing. Entries from Belfast Boat Club, Belfast Rowing Club, Lady Victoria, Lagan Scullers and Methodist College Belfast brought the total number of crews competing to thirty four including the seven crews from Portadown. The fine weather conditions led to some fast times being set. The fastest crew on the water was MCB Womens Junior quad in a time of 1:04:19 with the fastest Portadown boat being that of James Hanna, Men Junior single, in a time of 1:05:20. As usual tea and toast was available at the start and a welcoming cup of soup awaited the exhausted competitors at the finish. The club wishes to thank those who took part and those who organised the event.

Full results of the event can be seen here and photos of the day can be viewed on the photos page.

Sport Comes to Town

Rowing legend and four times Olympic Gold Medalist Sir Matthew Pincent visited the club on 24th June at the start of the Sport Comes to Town Festival. Matthew was a last minute stand in for Sir Steve Redgrave, who unfortunately had a cycling accident in America and couldn't make it. Whilst at the club Matthew chatted with members, posed for photographs and officially named our two new boats. The brave man even handed his Olympic Gold Medals around for everyone to see. The club is very appreciative of Matthew's visit and special thanks go Dr. Nigel Dobson of the Sports Institute NI for arranging this.

More pictures of the days event can be seen on the photos page.

There was success for the club at this years Belfast Sprints Regatta. James Hanna won two medals, the first in the Junior 18 single scull and then the senior double with his partner Stefan McIlveen.

SportNI Funding

The club was successful in obtaining a grant from SportNI to promote our Women on the Water programme. The grant has allowed the club to purchase two new boats, a quad and a single, which will provide additional capability for training and competition.
